Yes and No to Powders

Making a drink is easy. Making it drinkable should be too.

There is a question that does not appear in any clinical guideline but that every Speech and Language Therapist and Dietitian working in dysphagia care knows the answer to.

How often do you see an empty glass or cup? Not half-empty. Not pushed to one side with two-thirds remaining. Empty.

The answer, for most practitioners, is rarely.

Thickened drinks have a compliance problem that the dysphagia community has lived with for a long time — acknowledged in practice, discussed at conferences, noted in patient records, and largely accepted as an unavoidable feature of modified texture care.

We think it is avoidable. And we think the evidence is straightforward.

You rarely see a finished thickened drink. Unless it’s a Slõ one. Because when favourite drinks have been thickened and still taste like favourite drinks, patients tend to finish them.

That’s not a marketing claim. It is a description of what happens when the thickening process stops compromising the drink.

The problem with powder thickeners

Powdered thickeners have been the category default for decades. But the clinical case for moving on is well established.

Consistency is the primary issue — the relationship between powder volume, liquid type, temperature, and elapsed time creates variability that is difficult to control reliably across a care team. IDDSI compliance requires precision; powder thickeners make precision difficult.

The second issue is palatability. Powdered thickeners alter the appearance of drinks — introducing cloudiness, graininess, and a texture that patients find off-putting. For a patient population already at elevated risk of dehydration, reduced intake is not a minor side effect. It is a clinical outcome.

Slõ Syrup addresses both. As a liquid drinks thickener it mixes cleanly, maintains clarity in most drinks, and delivers consistent viscosity with significantly less preparation variability. The preparation itself is three simple steps:

Add. Stir. Go Slõ.

Reproducible by every member of a care team. Reproducible at home by a patient or carer. And crucially — producing a drink that looks and tastes close enough to the original that patients are more likely to drink all of it.

The case for powdered ONS

The second half of this argument runs in the other direction — and it is equally important.

Oral nutritional supplements are a cornerstone of dysphagia nutrition management. The problem has never been the clinical case for ONS; it has been the format. Ready-to-drink supplements carry a higher cost per serving, cold-chain logistics requirements, and an artificial taste many patients find unpleasant.

The compliance challenge here mirrors the thickened drink challenge: a supplement that does not get finished is a supplement that is not working.

The NHS position on powdered ONS is clear (NICE NG22) — powder is preferred wherever clinically appropriate, for reasons of cost efficiency, shelf life, and logistical practicality. The direction of travel in commissioning reflects this.

Slõ  Milkshakes+ sit precisely in that space.

High in calories and protein, they provide the highest nutrition per ml of all pre-thickened ONS. Flexible in preparation volume, and — returning to the principle above — genuinely palatable. Made with fresh cold whole milk and flavoured with natural ingredients.

A supplement that tastes like a milkshake is a supplement patients are more likely to finish.

Add. Shake. Go Slõ.

Three steps. Consistent preparation. A result that patients look forward to rather than tolerate.

Why both arguments belong together

The apparent contradiction — saying no to one kind of powder while saying yes to another — resolves the moment you apply the same clinical standard to both.

In texture modification: the question is which approach produces the safest, most consistent, most palatable result.

Liquid thickeners answer that question better than powdered ones.

In nutritional support: the question is which format delivers the best clinical and economic outcome. Powdered ONS answers that question better than RTD.

Same principle. Different answers. Both of them in the interest of the patient finishing their drink.

Some powders belong in the past. Some belong in the now.

Questions we often hear

Why do patients not finish thickened drinks?

The primary reason is palatability. Powdered thickeners alter the appearance, texture, and taste of drinks — introducing cloudiness, graininess, and an off-putting mouthfeel. For a patient population already at risk of dehydration, reduced intake is a clinical outcome, not a minor side effect.

What is the difference between a liquid thickener and a powder thickener?

Liquid thickeners such as Slõ Syrup mix without lumping, maintain clarity in most drinks, and deliver consistent viscosity regardless of who prepares them. Powder thickeners vary in outcome depending on liquid type, temperature, stirring time, and the volume used — making precision difficult to impossible across a care team.

Does the NHS support powdered oral nutritional supplements?

Yes. NHS commissioning guidance favours powdered ONS over ready-to-drink formats wherever clinically appropriate, citing cost efficiency, longer shelf life, and logistical practicality.

Slõ Milkshakes+ are a powdered pre-thickened ONS designed to align with this direction.

What IDDSI level do Slõ products comply with?

All IDDSI Levels 1, 2 , 3 and 4. Rach batch of Slo Drinks is tested during production and randomly after production so clinicians, carers and patients can be confident the drink they make will match the Level prescribed.

Slõ Drinks has been developing dysphagia-friendly drinks in collaboration with Speech and Language Therapists and Dietitians since 2005.

Yes and No to Powders

Making a drink is easy. Making it drinkable should be too.

_______________________________________________________________________

If you care for someone with dysphagia — or if you are managing it yourself — there is probably a moment you recognize.

An unfinished drink. The cup that sits on the side, two-thirds full or going cold. The nutritional supplement bottle that somehow never quite gets to the end.

It is not stubbornness. It is not ingratitude. It is what happens when a drink does not taste like a drink anymore.

And it has been accepted for too long as something that cannot be helped.

You rarely see a finished thickened drink. Unless it’s a Slõ one. Because when favourite drinks have been thickened and still taste like favourite drinks, patients tend to finish them.

This isn’t about managing dysphagia. It’s about making drinks worth finishing.

What changes with Slõ  Syrup?

Most thickening powders change a drink in ways that go beyond the thickness. They cloud it. They add a grainy texture. They alter the taste. And they are unforgiving — the wrong amount, left to sit too long, stirred too little, and the result is something that looks and feels nothing like the drink it started as.

Slõ  Syrup is a liquid thickener. It mixes clearly. It does not lump. In most drinks it stays close to transparent — which means a glass of orange juice still looks like orange juice, and a cup of tea still looks like a cup of tea. The taste of the drink comes through because the thickener is not competing with it.

And the preparation could not be simpler:

Add. Stir. Go Slõ

That is it. The same result every time, for whoever is making the drink — you, a family member, a carer, a nurse. No measuring errors, no lumps, no guesswork. Just a drink that tastes like it should.

What changes with Slõ Milkshakes+

The other half of this conversation is about nutrition. When eating and drinking is difficult, getting enough calories and protein becomes a real challenge — and the supplements that are supposed to help are often the ones that end up unfinished in the fridge.

Ready-to-drink supplement cartons have their place. But they are expensive, they need to be kept cold, and the honest truth is that many of them do not taste the way anyone would choose to start or end their day.

Slõ  Milkshakes+ is a powder you mix yourself — which means you control the quantity, the temperature, and what you pair it with. It makes a proper milkshake. Not a supplement in a cup. A milkshake, with the calories and protein that matter, that happens to be exactly what someone with dysphagia needs.

Add. Shake. Go Slõ

Three steps. Quick enough for a busy morning. Simple enough that whoever makes it — at any time of day, in any kitchen — gets the same good result.

Yes and no

We know this might seem like an unusual position for one brand to hold: saying no to thickening powder and yes to nutritional powder in the same breath.

But the logic is the same in both cases. Thickening powder had its moment. There is a better way now, and it produces drinks people actually want to finish. Nutritional powder, done right, is not a compromise — it is the forward-thinking choice, and the one that the NHS backs for exactly the right reasons.

One is the past. One is the now. Both decisions are in service of the same thing: an empty glass, cup or mug.

Some powders belong in the past. Some belong in the now.

Both of these decisions are about making things easier – making drinks worth finishing – making dysphagia friendly drinks.

 Try it

If you want to try Slõ  Syrup or Slõ  Milkshakes+ for the first time, order a sample here>>

Questions we often hear

Why does my relative not finish their thickened drink?

It is usually the thickener, not the person. Powder thickeners change the way a drink looks, feels, and tastes. When the drink no longer resembles the original, many people with dysphagia simply stop drinking it — even when they are thirsty.

What is Slõ Syrup and how is it different?

Slõ Syrup is a liquid thickener. Unlike thickening powders, it mixes clearly without lumping and does not significantly alter the taste or appearance of most drinks. A glass of orange juice thickened with Slõ Syrup still looks like orange juice.

How do I make a drink with Slõ Syrup?

Add Slõ Syrup to the drink. Stir. Serve. The preparation is three steps and produces a consistent result each time, regardless of who makes it.

What are Slõ Milkshakes+ and are they suitable for someone with dysphagia?

Slõ Milkshakes+ are pre-thickened powdered nutritional supplement. Flavoured with natural ingredients and mixed with whole cold milk, they provides high calories and protein in a milkshake format.

They are made specifically for people with dysphagia who need additional nutrition but find ready-to-drink supplements unpalatable or inconvenient.

How do I make Slõ Milkshakes+?

Add the powder to cold whole milk. Shake. Serve. Three steps, consistent every time.

Speech-Language Pathology and Palliative Care

Speech-Language Pathology and Palliative Care

“At the recent UKSRG conference, I sat in on several interesting talks. One was given by Laura Chahda about Speech Therapists/ pathologists role in palliative care. It was something new to me and so I asked Laura to share some of her presentation.

You can find it below and hope you find it as interesting as I did”. Mathew Done. MD.

When a Sip Matters

When people think about speech therapists, probably one of the last things they might think of is palliative care (PC) supports.

But at the end of life, one of the most important things commonly see is individuals who (1) want to communicate with their loved ones and (2) want to enjoy eating and drinking.

Swallowing difficulties are common in people with life-limiting illness. For many people receiving PC, these changes can make something as simple as a sip of water uncomfortable, frightening, or exhausting.

This is where speech therapists play a unique role.

At the end of life, our focus often shifts away from rehabilitation and toward comfort and quality of life. Rather than trying to “fix” swallowing, we help people eat and drink in ways that feel safe, manageable, and meaningful to them.

This might involve adjustments to positioning, pacing, environment, fatigue management, and food and fluid textures. It also involves guiding conversations with families and care teams about goals, risks, and preferences around eating and drinking.

One strategy that sometimes becomes part of this conversation is thickened fluids.

Thickened drinks are commonly used in dysphagia management because a slightly thicker liquid can move more slowly through the mouth and throat and increase sensory awareness.

For some people, this can improve control during swallowing and reduce coughing, choking, or discomfort when drinking.

In PC, thickened fluids are not about rigid rules or restrictions. Instead, they are one tool among many that may help support comfort and participation in eating and drinking.

Comfort eating and drinking is often misunderstood as meaning someone should simply “have whatever they want.”

In reality, comfort often means reducing distress. If drinking thin fluids leads to repeated coughing, breathlessness, or anxiety, a slightly thicker drink may feel calmer and easier to manage.

For another person, maintaining familiar drinks and routines may matter most. These decisions are deeply personal and depend on the individual’s goals, preferences, and overall condition.

Speech therapists help individuals and families navigate these nuanced decisions.

Our role is to balance safety, comfort, autonomy, and quality of life—supporting individuals to continue enjoying food and drink in ways that align with what matters most to them.

Because at the end of life, a sip of water isn’t just hydration. It can be so much more than that, it is comfort, it is connection with their loved ones and sometimes, it’s one of the last simple pleasures a person wishes to hold onto.

Many of these ideas can be explored further in the book Speech-Language Pathology and Palliative Care (2025) edited by L.Chahda, B. Mathisen and L. Carey, which brings together international perspectives on how communication and swallowing support can enhance comfort, dignity, and person-centred care during this stage of life.

When powdered thickeners don’t work

When powdered thickeners don’t work: a liquid alternative is now available

For many people with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), thickened drinks are an important part of staying safe and well hydrated. However, powdered thickeners don’t work for everyone.

People often say:

“I don’t like the powder.”
“I find it hard to make up.”
“I’ve stopped using it.”

When thickening stops, drinks may become unsafe to swallow. This can increase the risk of coughing, chest infections, dehydration, and hospital admission — something no patient or carer wants.

Sometimes it isn’t the treatment itself that causes the problem, but the format. Just as liquid medicines are used when tablets aren’t suitable, some people need an alternative to powdered drink thickeners.

A liquid drink thickener — in a simple, consistent system

Slõ Syrup is a liquid drink thickener designed for people with dysphagia who struggle with powdered thickeners.

It thickens drinks to a safer consistency, but comes as a liquid rather than a powder.

Importantly, it is supplied as part of a simple thickening system. Each bottle comes with a clearly marked measuring cup to help you prepare drinks more consistently — without scoops or guesswork.

Many people find this approach:

  • easier to use
  • simpler to measure
  • less messy
  • more manageable day to day

A liquid thickener may help if:

  • you dislike or avoid powdered thickeners
  • preparing powders feels complicated or stressful
  • thickening advice hasn’t been followed consistently

For some people, changing the format — and using a clearer preparation method — makes it easier to keep drinks thickened and stay safely hydrated.

Trying it first

If powdered thickeners haven’t worked for you or the person you care for, it can be helpful to try a liquid thickener first.

Starting with a small amount allows you to see whether it:

  • fits into daily routines
  • feels straightforward to prepare
  • is tolerated and liked

This helps you and your healthcare professional decide whether it’s the right option.

Using Slõ Syrup

Slõ Syrup isn’t intended to replace powdered thickeners for everyone. It’s an alternative for people who genuinely struggle with powders.

If you are under the care of a speech and language therapist or another healthcare professional, they can advise whether a liquid thickener is suitable and which thickness is right for you.

Clear instructions, ingredients and allergen information are provided to support safe use by patients and carers, alongside the measuring cup to guide preparation.

Supporting safer drinking, every day

When powdered thickeners don’t work, the issue is often practicality rather than willingness. Having another option — with a simpler, more consistent way to prepare drinks — can make thickened drinks easier to manage and less stressful.

If you or someone you care for has dysphagia and finds powdered thickeners difficult, you don’t have to keep struggling with something that isn’t working.

Slõ Syrup can be purchased directly from us at slodrinks.com.au/shop or via Amazon Prime making it easy to access when you need it.

When powdered thickeners don’t work

When powdered thickeners don’t work: a liquid thickening system is now available

For many people with dysphagia, thickened drinks are essential for safer swallowing. In practice, however, not every patient can tolerate powdered thickeners — and when they don’t, adherence often breaks down.

Clinicians hear it frequently:
“I don’t like the powder.”
“I can’t manage it.”
“I’ve stopped using it.”

When this happens, thickening advice may no longer be followed, increasing the risk of poor hydration, aspiration, and avoidable clinical deterioration.

In everyday clinical practice, it is routine to change the format of a treatment when a patient cannot tolerate the standard option. If someone struggles with tablets, a liquid alternative is prescribed. Until recently, that same change of format has not been available to clinicians supporting people with dysphagia.

A liquid drinks thickener in a standardised system format

Slõ Syrup is a liquid drinks thickener designed for use with patients with dysphagia where powdered thickeners are not tolerated or adhered to.

It delivers the same clinical purpose — thickening drinks to the appropriate IDDSI Level — but in a liquid format rather than a powder.

Importantly, it forms part of a standardised thickening system. Each bottle is supplied with a purpose-designed measuring cup to support consistent preparation to the prescribed IDDSI Level, reducing reliance on scoops and variable mixing technique.

This difference in format and preparation method is clinically relevant where:

  • patients refuse or avoid powdered thickeners
  • carers find preparation difficult
  • adherence to thickening advice is inconsistent

In these situations, a liquid drinks thickener within a controlled preparation system may help patients continue to thicken their drinks — supporting safer hydration where standard options have failed.

Starting with samples to assess acceptability

Where a patient has struggled with powders, the first step is often assessing acceptability before requesting ongoing supply.

Many clinicians begin by requesting samples (www.slodrinks.com.au/clinicians-library), allowing the patient to trial the liquid thickening system and confirm that it is practical and well tolerated.

This approach helps to:

  • reduce risk
  • avoid unnecessary prescribing
  • provide reassurance to Medicines Management before proceeding via non-formulary or specialist-led routes

Using Slõ Syrup in practice

Slõ Syrup is not intended to replace powdered thickeners, nor is it proposed for routine prescribing. It is designed for patient-specific, clinician-led use where powdered thickeners are ineffective or unacceptable.

Although it may not currently appear on local formularies, it can be requested for individual patients using established NHS mechanisms such as non-formulary requests or Individual Funding Requests (IFRs). Every ICB has a process for considering non-formulary items where there is clear clinical rationale.

To support this, the Non-Formulary Access Pack in the Clinicians’ Library includes:

  • a concise clinical rationale
  • a Specialist Initiation Request template
  • an indicative 28-day supply guide
  • full product data (ingredients, allergens and preparation instructions)

Supporting adherence and safer hydration

When powdered thickeners are not tolerated, the issue is rarely preference alone — it is adherence. Having a liquid drinks thickener available within a standardised preparation system gives clinicians another option for patients who might otherwise stop thickening altogether.

For people living with dysphagia, and the clinicians who support them, offering the right format — and a more controlled preparation method — can make a meaningful difference in maintaining safer hydration.

If your dysphagia patient cannot tolerate the thickening powder they have been prescribed, they do not need to struggle with it.

You can begin by requesting samples. And although Slõ Syrup may not yet appear on your local formulary, it can still be requested for individual prescribing by downloading the Non-Formulary Access Pack at www.slodrinks.com.au/clinicians-library

Slõ Syrup is also available for direct purchase at slodrinks.com.au/shop or via Amazon Prime.

To see how the Slõ thickening system works in practice, a short demonstration video is available at: www.slodrinks.com.au/i

Enjoyable thickened Christmas Drinks

Enjoyable thickened Christmas Drinks

Somehow, having a glass of Asti, Champagne or ‘Secco has become an essential part of Christmas celebrations. It’s more than a drink — it’s that shared moment when everyone raises a glass together.

And now, if you have dysphagia, you can join in too.

Slõ Syrup is a liquid drinks thickener that makes drinks safer to swallow — even a glass of bubbly. It thickens the drink to the right IDDSI Level without taking away the sparkle. The bubbles stay in, so they still fizz and pop on the tongue, just like they should.

• One pump to thicken a drink to Level 1
• Two pumps for Level 2
• Three pumps for Level 3

That’s all it takes. Just press, stir, and wait a few moments.

Your drink will be safer to swallow, but it will still look and taste like the original — whether it’s a glass of bubbly, a G&T, or even a festive hot chocolate.

Enjoyable thickened Christmas Drinks

How to thicken Christmas drinks and make them enjoyable

Somehow, having a glass of Asti, Champagne or ‘Secco has become an essential part of Christmas celebrations.

It’s more than a drink — it’s the moment everyone raises a glass together. And now your dysphagia patients can join in too.

Slõ Syrup is a liquid drinks thickener designed to make any drink safer to swallow — even a glass of bubbly. It thickens the drink to the prescribed IDDSI Level without taking away the sparkle. The bubbles stay in, so they still fizz and pop on the tongue, adding back that sensory enjoyment that powders so often take away.

Because it’s scoop-less, there’s no measuring or guessing. The easy-to-use pump delivers a precise dose every time:
• Once to thicken a drink to Level 1
• Twice for Level 2
• Three times for Level 3

The result is a drink that’s safer to swallow, looks just like the original, and — crucially — tastes like it too. Whether it’s a chilled glass of Prosecco, a festive G&T, or even mulled wine by the fire, Slõ Syrup makes it possible for people with dysphagia to enjoy the same moments as everyone else.

It’s part of what we mean when we say Safer, Easier and Enjoyable.

Who would have thought the fastest way to make a safer, easier and enjoyable Christmas drink — is to go Slõ?

Slõ Syrup for cold and hot drinks is available for doctors to prescribe in 1-litre bottles or 200 ml trial bottles, and it’s listed on all major e-patient systems.

If you’d like your patients to try it before Christmas, we’re happy to send a free sample.

The Strawberries with 23g of Protein (min.)

ONS drinks aren’t short of nutrition. On paper, they’ve always delivered protein, calories, vitamins, and minerals.

The problem is, patients don’t drink on paper. And in practice, too many of those bottles are left unfinished.

Real taste matters

That’s why we made Slõ Milkshakes+ differently. No artificial flavours. Just real strawberries, real bananas, and real cocoa.

We thought: if it tastes like the real thing, patients are more likely to finish it.

And when they do, they get a minimum of 23g of protein, up to 399 calories, and 25 essential vitamins and minerals — in every 200ml serving.

Not theory. Not a nutrition panel. Nutrition that’s actually consumed.

Made for dysphagia

Of course, Slõ Milkshakes+ aren’t just any ONS. They’re pre-thickened to the prescribed IDDSI Level. That means no over-thickening – ever!

For dietitians, that’s confidence it matches the IDDSI Level their Speech Therapy colleagues have prescribed. For patients, it’s a safer, easier, more enjoyable way to drink.

We didn’t reinvent nutrition. Just made it taste better.

Because compliance isn’t about the numbers on the label. It’s about whether a patient will actually finish the drink in their hand.

And they finish drinks that taste like real strawberries, bananas, or chocolate milkshakes.

The fastest way to boost nutrition isn’t more prescribing. It’s more finishing.
And the fastest way to make that happen is to go Slõ.

Ready when you are

Slõ Milkshakes+ are available on prescription in a range of real flavours. Because when it comes to nutrition, we’re sure taste isn’t an afterthought. It’s the key to compliance.

The scoop-less alternative

Scoop less drinks thickener

Scoop less drinks thickener

The scoop-less alternative

Tins of “Clear” powdered thickener and a scoop — that’s how drinks for people with dysphagia have been made for as long as we can remember. It works…up to a point.

But the truth is, that scoop  is stressful to use and inaccurate. One scoop heaped, one scoop level. A drink that was sometimes too thin, frequently over thickened and very often left unfinished.

Everyone has had to put up with it because there wasn’t another way.

The problem is, that “this way” became normal. And normal meant residents and patients being under-hydrated, patients refusing drinks, and clinicians unsure whether a prescribed IDDSI Level had really been met.

It’s like something from the dark ages.

Slõ Syrup isn’t a powder at all — and it’s scoop-less.

It’s a liquid drinks thickener in a bottle with a precise pump. One press makes a drink to Level 1. Two presses for Level 2. Three for Level 3. That’s it.

No having to dig for the scoop in the tin. No guesswork. No apologising to a patient because their “juice” looks like wallpaper paste.

And because Slõ Syrup has no flavour, the drink you make — whether it’s water, juice, tea, coffee, or something fizzy — tastes like the original your patients crave. Which means it’s more likely to be finished.

Now the fastest way to thicken a drink is with a pump. In other words: go Slõ.

We can’t pretend tins of thickener didn’t help

They did when there was nothing else. But today, with hydration and safety under constant scrutiny, you, your patients and carers deserve dysphagia-friendly drinks.

They should always be safer to swallow, easier to prepare and enjoyable to drink.

Slõ Syrup does all three and it available in 1 litre bottles and 200ml trial bottles for doctors to prescribe via their E-Patient systems and for hospital pharmacies to order for their wards via Alliance Healthcare.

A Slõ future

Looking at rotary phones, floppy disks, and dial-up internet now – they look like they are from the dark ages. “Clear” thickening powders do too now Slõ Syrup is available.

Tins of Thickener Belong in the Dark – Ages

tins of thickener belong in the dark ages

Tins of Thickener Belong in the Dark Ages

Thickening drinks for people with dysphagia doesn’t have to mean opening a tin of powder, measuring out scoops, and hoping you’ve got the right consistency. That way of doing things is slow, messy, and often results in drinks that are lumpy, cloudy, or left unfinished.

It’s time for something safer, easier, and more enjoyable.

Meet Slõ Syrup – A Liquid Drinks Thickener

Slõ Syrup is a new kind of liquid drinks thickener designed to replace outdated powdered thickeners. It comes in a pump-dispensed bottle that delivers an exact dose every time:

  • Press once for Level 1 (Slightly Thick)

  • Press twice for Level 2 (Mildly Thick)

  • Press three times for Level 3 (Moderately Thick)

That’s it. No guesswork. No scoops. No lumps. Just safe, reliable drinks—made in seconds.

Who’d have thought the fastest way to safely thicken a drink… is to go Slõ?

Tastes Like the Drinks You Love

Unlike powdered thickeners, Slõ Syrup mixes in easily and has no flavour. That means tea, coffee, juice, fizzy drinks, even a glass of wine taste just like the originals—only now safer to swallow.

People with dysphagia deserve drinks that don’t just meet IDDSI Levels but also taste and look as they should. That’s what Slõ Syrup delivers.

Easier for Carers and Clinicians

Carers and clinicians know how important it is to keep people hydrated. Slõ Syrup makes it easier:

  • One pump = the exact dose needed

  • Clear IDDSI Levels, shown on pack

  • No scoops, no wasted powder, no risk of under- or over-thickening

It saves time, reduces waste, and improves compliance—because people are more likely to finish drinks that actually taste like drinks.

Why Switch to Slõ Syrup?

  • Safer – precise, consistent dosing every time

  • Easier – no measuring spoons, no mess, no guesswork

  • Enjoyable – drinks look and taste just like the originals

That’s why we say: Tins of thickener belong in the dark ages.

So, What Is Slõ Syrup?

Slõ Syrup is a Liquid Drinks Thickener that makes hot, cold, fizzy, and even alcoholic drinks safe and enjoyable for people with swallowing difficulties.

Slõ Syrup is a better alternative to clear powder thickeners. Unlike messy powder thickeners that clump, float or affect the taste, Slõ Syrup is a thickening agent for liquids which is lump free, grit free and completely flavourless. That means the drink you start with, tastes just like the drink you end up with.

And because it’s a liquid, it disperses instantly and evenly—helping your drinks thicken quickly, accurately, and reliably to the right IDDSI Level.

How Slõ Syrup Stands Out From Other Drinks Thickeners

We know dysphagia care deserves more than one-size-fits-all. So every part of Slõ Syrup has been developed with clinician and guided by real patient needs to make an effective thickener for drinks.

Here’s why more people are switching from powder thickeners to Slõ Syrup liquid thickener:

Safer
– Developed to thicken drinks to the correct IDDSI Level every time
– Clinically tested for consistency and flow
– Used in hospitals, care homes, and by speech therapists across the UK

Easier
– No lumps, no floating powder, no grit – mixes easily
– Just add the pre-measured Slõ Syrup thickening liquid and stir
– One bottle replaces multiple scoops, messy tins, and guesswork

Enjoyable
– No flavour—so your coffee tastes like coffee and your cola still fizzes
– Works with both hot and cold drinks, including fizzy and alcoholic
– Encourages hydration – patients are more likely to finish a Slõ Drink

What Makes Slõ Syrup Different From Other Drinks Thickeners?

Precise measured doses of Slõ Syrup means the drink is always made to the correct thickness.
Thickening dysphagia drinks isn’t just about adding any powder such as Thick and Easy, Nutilis Clear or ThickenUp and hoping for the best. It’s a delicate balance of ingredients which make the exact thickness needed every time, and doesn’t affect the flavour.

That’s why Slõ Syrup uses a precise blend of pharmaceutical-grade thickeners, formulated over years with input from Clinicians, Speech and Language Therapists and Dietitians.

Smart Packaging
Each bottle is marked with easy-to-follow pictorial instructions and the relevant IDDSI Level, making it easy for patients, carers and professionals alike to get it right every time.

No guesswork. No stress. Just Dysphagia Friendly Drinks—done properly.
